Zhang Yimou says "Yes I was a cameraman and I decided to become a director because the work of a director is very interesting. After being famous as a cameraman and as an actor he ventured out to be film director. Ofcourse, being a cameraman and an actor helped me a lot as a director because to be a successful director one has to have a complete knowledge." Zhang Yimou, Chinese director who, as a prominent member of China’s “Fifth Generation,” is known for his films that explore sexual repression and political oppression. After graduating in 1982, Zhang worked as a cinematographer on such films as Yige he bage (1983; One and Eight), Huang tudi (1984; Yellow Earth), and Lao jing (1986; Old Well).
