1998 saw an incident in Tamil Nadu concerning a man accused of injecting people with AIDS infected blood. NACO and other NGOs took the initiative to break social awareness on AIDS through different forms of media. They also share the problems of stigma and segregation faced by infected individuals due to a lack of awareness. They also point out how individuals of the medical fraternity react to infected people, the mental and physical effects on infected individuals.
