Informally employed and working in the civic waste management bodies these sanitation workers are vital for New Delhi's waste management. These people are referred to as rag pickers and they scavenge and segregate waste and sell the recyclable waste after picking them from dumping stations like this one. They are usually unpaid and they work as sanitation workers for free and make a living selling the trash that they scavenge. They are generally not well equipped as you can see in the video. With no proper protective gear, they risk exposure to microbes and toxins from the wastes.
