Snow leopards are so well adapted to their harsh mountainous habitat that even spotting them against a rocky backdrop can be almost impossible. The snow leopard’s powerful build allows it to scale great steep slopes with ease. Its hind legs give the snow leopard the ability to leap six times the length of its body. Here in the Himalayas, snow leopards are usually found between 3,000 and 5,400 metres above sea level. The rugged outcrops at this altitude provide good cover and a clear field of vision for the cats, but they are also notoriously difficult to navigate.
