It is usually around dawn when the bonfire is lit up and the troupe of the dancers, fully dressed and prepared, come up and start their performance. There is a mythical story behind this practice. They say the bonfire symbolizes ‘Uli-jugan’, a goddess, and wife of ‘Raja Phanta’ who also happens to be a witch. It is ‘Raja Phanta’ and his close friend ‘Ganda Thakur’, who dress up wearing peacock feather headgear called ‘Budhiyo’ and bamboo headgear called ‘Bawa’ respectively, and Kaali, dressed as a woman, dances alongside Uli. It is after performing this dance that ‘Raja Phanta’ climbs up the burning Uli and grabs the ‘Udid Papad’ at the top of it. The performance they now do is a re-enactment of that scene, while accompanied by ‘Niskya’ i.e., animal mask wearers and ‘Rayas’ i.e., men dress
