It was a dramatic event but low key in the execution. As the police entered heavily at Poes Garden, Chennai on the 6th of December morning, the occupant, the former Chief Minister and supremo of the AIADMK party was in morning prayer. Two and a half hours later at 9:45 AM J.Jayalalitha was formally arrested up by the police and produced before the city magistrate who ruled that she should be kept in judicial custody until the 21st of December. A year ago, an AIADMK minus Jayalalitha Jayaram seemed an impossibility. With the taking in of the former chief minister on December 7 in connection with the dubious purchase of 45,302 colour TV sets, the party will now have to learn to live without its leader.
