With a cinematic backdrop of trees among mist inside Panna National Park in Madhya Pradesh, a Sambhar buck rubs its nose and forehead against a tree trunk, in pre rutting action. On a misty winter morning, this Sambhar stag rubs its antlers against a tree trunk, to establish its territory and relieve an itch in its antlers. This activity is a social communication through olfactory glands in Sambars. The males are also observed to rub their glands to tree trunks or branches and even the ground during the rut season.
