These scenes of celebration captured the upbeat mood of Congress party in West Bengal. Although the ruling Left Front managed to squeak past the winning post in a narrowest of victories in the Calcutta Municipal Corporation election analysts almost unanimously agree that it was the Congress which was the moral victor. Out of the 141seats which were contested the Left Front won 70 seats, the Congress 66, the BJP 2 while independence won three seats, two of whom are supposed to be Congress rebel candidates this contrasts with the outgoing CMC in which the CPM led Left Front had 90 seats while the Congress had a meager 36 seats only and state Congress leaders cannot help but gloat about the election results.
