The bus was travelling to Davanagere, 250 km from the state capital of Bangalore to nearby Melebennur when the accident took place in the Harihar area on Monday, June 8 1999. More than 80 passengers feared dead after this bus plunged into the lake. The Police officials in the area, Gopal Hosur says, Apparently there was a tyre burst, the driver lost control and the bus fell into the water. It was over crowded probably there were 120 to 130 people including the few on the top. Luckily some of the fisherman who were already there saved a lot of people otherwise the death poll would have been much higher.
