Visvanatha Temple in Khajuraho - a virtual tour

Among the Khajuraho temples, the Visvanatha temple is the finest and the best preserved example of Chandella architecture and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It used to be a Panchayatana shrine but now, out of its four subsidiary shrines, only twi i.e. th eNorth-East and South-West shrines exist. The structure shows all the elements of a developed temple including the mukha mandapa (entrance porch), the mandapa, maha mandapa with transepts, antarala and the garbha griha or the inner sanctum enclosed by an inner ambulatory with transepts on the sides and the rear. Architecturally, the temple falls between the Laxmana and the Kandariya Mahadev temples. The mandapa inscripts refer to the dedications of the two lingas, one made of emerald and the other in stone in a towering temple of Shiva Markat
