The piles of cut wood on the road side have been collected to power the tea factories that still run on wood in Munnar, spewing smoke into the clean Nilgiri air. A drive-through within a tea garden in Munnar provides a glimpse into the vast ungovernable holdings that prompted Tata Tea to divest its ownership in land to the 20, 000 odd workers and created the Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Co. which is almost entirely employee owned. So the workers you see walking on the road here own the land they're passing through, and work it as well! One of the largest worker owned enterprises in the world, truly!
