Minister of tourism and culture, Ananth Kumar announced to confer the Gandhi Peace Prize for the year 2000 on Dr. Nelson Mandela and Gramin Bank of Bangladesh. The award is chosen in recognition of exemplary work resulting in a social, economic and political transformation in non-violence and Gandhian means. The jury of the award comprises of the Prime Minister, the chief justice of India, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and two others.
