Students waiting for their buses on the roads of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu is one of the most literate states in India. The state's literacy rate is 80.33% in 2011, which is above the national average. A survey conducted by the Industry body Assocham ranks Tamil Nadu top among Indian states with about 100% Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in primary and upper primary education. It was during the British rule in India that the education system of the state of Tamil Nadu started prospering and growing by leaps and bounds. Education in Tamil Nadu, before the settlement of the English in the country and during the early years of the colonial rule, was a very private affair, with each household deciding whether their children will study in the different institutions across the state.
