Girgaon, a congested residential locality in South Mumbai. A cluster of one room tenement buildings. Almost 40 years ago seven housewives assembled on the terrace of one such building. Driven by a desire to supplement their household income, these women undertook a simple task that was to change their lives forever. A task they were more than familiar with. By the end of the day, they had rolled out four packets of papads or papadums. The papad they prepared were bought by the loner trust that in turn sold them in the free market. Thus on the 15 of March 1959 was born a movement, a movement called Lijjat.
