Prayer wheels have a strong significance in Buddhism. A prayer wheel may be inscribed with the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum and even other mantras along with it. It is believed that rotating the wheel has the same effect as reciting the mantra. Like other monasteries, the Tawang Monastery also has prayer wheels right at its entrance, which are turned by devotees as mark of their respect.
