Ancient sculptures and other excavated objects, history collections at Shri Maharaja Pratap Singh museum in Srinagar. Kashmir has been historically known as one of the oldest habitations in Asia, having a distinction of a recorded and documented history of over 5000 years. Towards the end of the 19th century the historical sites, habitations and artifacts became recognized as the representatives of cultural resources of this civilization and in recognition of this, in the later part of the 19th century a memorandum was submitted to the then Dogra ruler of the Jammu and Kashmir State, Maharaja Pratap Singh for setting up of a museum in Srinagar that would exhibit the cultural and archaeological collections from the regions stretching from Jammu, Kashmir, Baltistan and Gilgit.
