East Makalu Glacier on the border between Nepal and Tibet

Makalu (8463m) is the fifth highest mountain in the world, located 22km east of Mount Everest, on the border between Nepal and Tibet. The name Makalu is probably taken from the Sanskrit word Maha-Kala, which means Big Black and is a by-name of Shiva - one of the most important gods of Hinduism. Makalu has two notable subsidiary peaks. Kangchungtse (7678m, also called Makalu II) lies about 3km north-northwest of the main summit. Rising about 4km north-northeast of the main summit across a broad plateau, and connected to Kangchungtse by a narrow saddle, is Chomolonzo (7818m).
