Gangotri is situated at an altitude of 3,048 mts above sea level at the Uttarakashi district of Uttarakhand state. Located on the banks of the holy Bhagirathi River is one of the Char Dhams of Uttarakhand. there is a natural rock Shivling at Gangotri which can be easily seen during winter because the water level decreases during that time. According to myths and legends, this was where Lord Shiv sat when he received the Ganga in hi matted locks.
