Shegar, Zegar or Shelkar (also known as New Tingri) at 4,050m is 7km diversion northwest of main Friendship Highway. It is the headquarters for Qomolangma (Jomolangma) Nature Preserve (Mt. Everest region). The ruins of Shegar Dorje Dzong, once the capital of Tingri region is located prominently overlooking the town. Just beneath is Shegar Chode monastery, founded originally in 1266 by Kagyu Lama was later converted into Gelugpa monastery after 17th century.
