The work of pulling a rickshaw manually is hard work and degrading to the human being doing it. Thus, this has been banned in many cities in modern India. See archival footage of manually-pulled cycle rickshaws running alongside Hindustan Ambassador cars, even as passersby drink nimbu pani, lemonade or shikanji to bear the sweltering humid heat of the Calcutta of yore.
