We have learnt about the Kerala snake boat races, and seen how tourists from all over throng the state in these months to watch the famous boat races. Let us look at another type of boat from Kerala--the houseboat or the kettuvellam. The word kettuvellam, when broken into kettu and vellam, means 'tied with ropes' and 'boat', in Malayalam. This houseboat is made of wooden planks joined and held together using coconut fibre ropes. It is nearly 60 to 70 feet in length, and is about 15 feet wide in the middle. Usually, the wood used to make houseboats in Kerala is 'Anjali'. The roof covering is made of bamboo poles and palm leaves. The body of the boat is painted using cashew nut oil.
