Vijay Lakshmi Pandit: "We were from Cherrapunji. My grandfather also was from Cherrapunji or Sohra. He joined the Government service in 1858. That time Sohra was the headquarters of the British. When they wanted to extend the administration in this region, especially when the British wanted to, when there was a conflict with the Burmere, and were looking for a central place and then also Cherrapunji very heavy rainfall there. My grandfather settled in Shillong with his family as a government servant. Later we came to the capital of Assam.
