Workers in the process of constructing a hydro-power tunnel north of Uttarkashi, along the road to Gangotri and Harsil, close to the Din Garh and the Jaonli Garh. It has now been confirmed that large-scale hydro-power construction activity was one of the chief causes of the calamitous Uttarakhand floods of 2013. Perhaps the ecologically fragile river-valley of the Ganga is not the most suited for such high impact industrial activity. Maybe small scale, local run of the river, sub 1MW projects, in larger numbers, would be more suited to the geologically active and unstable region of the Western Himalaya.
