In 1994, in remote villages of the Andhra Pradesh, women launched a vigorous campaign to ban the sale of country liquor. It was an emotive issue for the women, the agitation could not be ignored and within months all political parties were committed to the cause. Indian Politician Jaya Jaitley says "The anti-liquor agitation of Andhra Pradesh was not sparked off by anything to do with anything in the legislature. But it was a women's movement without any political leadership to start with and it was all political parties that had to fall in line."
