In cities like Madras, though film hoardings not only dominate the skyline, they match in terms of hugeness the other major commodity sold through this outdoor medium, the politician. Most of these hoardings are painted by veterans almost with a zealous passion of committed artists they complete almost one hoarding 30 feet by 10 feet in one day. It is perhaps a pertinent footnote that from among this breed of hoarding painters evolve the genius of M. F. Hussain India's most celebrated contemporary artist who has in fact always flaunted his humble beginnings at the Internation Film Festival in Calcutta early this year Husain paid a unique tribute to the genius of Satyajit Ray by interpreting Ray's major films on to huge film muddles.
