Talk of martial arts, or talk of ritualistic masks. Talk of a dance, or talk of drama. Harking back in time to a few centuries earlier, let’s immerse ourselves in the experience of a forgotten tribal dance of eastern India – one of its richest – Chhau. Typically performed in the light of the Chaitra Parva, Chhau dance performances are held during the spring festival, which is celebrated for 13 consecutive days. This Indian tribal dance form originates from small communities spread out across the Indian states of (in today’s terms) Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkand. There are over 200 recognized Chhau dance groups in India, performing powerful acrobatics and aerial somersaults, dancing to rhythmic drum beats and melodious wind instruments.Some say that the term Chhau refers to the Sanskrit
