The stingrays are cartilaginous fishes related to sharks. Most stingrays have one or more barbed stings on the tail, which is used exclusively for self-defense. The stinger may reach a length of 35cm, its underside having two grooves with venom glands. Stingrays have flattened bodies that allow them to effectively conceal themselves in their environment. They hide beneath the sand on the ocean floor. They use smell and electro-receptors similar to those of sharks for detecting prey and movements. Stingrays feel primarily on molluscs, crustaceans and occasionally small fishes. Stingrays are common in coastal tropical and subtropical marine waters throughout the world.
