The city of joy Calcutta was under siege as Prime Minister industrialists Chief Ministers and diplomats came in hordes last week to celebrate 100 years of the Confederation of Indian Industry CII. The 300 year old city went out of its way to welcome everyone with traditional warmth and affection. The guest list was something CII would be proud of for a long time to come. Never before in Indian history had a non-government agency succeeded in playing host to such a galaxy of world leaders from Indian Prime Minister Narasimha Rao and British Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd to Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati.
