Guru Pt. Devi Lal was an accomplished Kathak artist, he belonged to that generation of artists who were not only well groomed in their own genre but wielded equal command and authority in related subjects. He started learning music in his early years from his father, Pandit Omkar Lal in Ajmer. A disciple of the great maestro, Ustad Faiyaz Khan, his father was a renowned musician. Again, it was he who initiated Devi Lal into the art of Kathak which he had learned from Pandit Narayan Prasad. Devi Lal migrated to Delhi along with his younger brother Durga Lal and it was in Delhi that he got the rare opportunity of being accepted as a student by Guru Pt. Sunder Prasad.
