On the first day of Diwali festive season, people buy utensils as it is considered auspicious according to the Hindu religion. It is said that on this day, 'Asura, and 'Devas' started the churning of the ocean to get 'Amrit', the nectar of immortality, and then 'Dhanvantari' goddess came out of the ocean with a jar of this nectar. Hence, the tradition of buying a utensil became popular. The day is named after the goddess 'Dhanvantari', an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
