The bag which the devotees of Lord Ayyappan are carrying on their head is called Irumudi, a holy bundle... The two compartment bag contains coconut filled with ghee and clarified butter. Only pilgrims those who observe the strict regimen for a minimum period of 41 days and carry the Irumudi can step on to the sacred "Pathinettam padi" (Flight of 18 steps) leading to the sanctum. Unlike certain Hindu temples, Sabarimala temple has no restrictions of caste or creed. The temple is open to males of all age groups and to women who have either passed their fertility age and those before reaching the stage of puberty. The devotees of Lord Ayyappan / Ayappan show the strength of their devotion in various ways. At every rest stop along the way are reminders of the mission these pilgrims are on. The
