Indian school students are taught the basics of ice-craft and ice-climbing along the walls of a glacier above Manali, in Himachal Pradesh, India. The instructor wears a helmet and teaches them basic tip-top ice climbing techniques. Mountaineering or mountain climbing is the sport, hobby or profession of hiking, skiing, depending on whether the route chosen is over rock, snow or ice. All require experience, athletic ability, and technical knowledge to maintain safety.
