Gorkhaland Statehood demand representatives meet the then Union Home Minister L.K. Advani in New Delhi. The Gorkha community resides mostly in Darjeeling, Kalimpong in West Bengal. The community has been pushing for a separate Gorkhaland state. The Gorkhaland Movement is the longest ongoing demand for separate statehood in the country. A Gorkha representative tells the media after the meeting: " We have submitted the memorandum to the honourable Prime Minister and home minister regarding the creation of smaller states. We have asked the government of India to look into the grievances and problems of the people of Bodoland, Gorkhaland, Jharkhand other areas where the people have been suppressed and deprived of getting their basic rights."
