Literature commands an impressive following and remains a passion with the educated Bengali middle class. Calcutta's celebrated college street houses book stores which are thronged by the bibliophiles. But it is the countless literary magazines which sustain and revitalise this interest in literature and poetry. Indian poet Sunil Gangopadhyay says "Calcutta's little magazines are unique. I don't know of any other city in the world which produces so many of them. Calcutta publishes between 200 and 400 little magazines, mainly, during the Book Fair, Tagore's birthday which is celebrated in a big way here and the Durga Pujas, when many puja specials are produced."
