Cochin International Airport is all set to emerge as the world’s first ‘Green Airport’ by tapping solar power to meet its energy requirements. The company has installed a 12 MW solar plant with more than 46,000 panels on 45 acres at an investment of ₹62 crore (₹5.17crore per MW). “With the commissioning of the plant, Cochin International Airport will become the world’s first airport to be completely powered by solar energy — as its entire power requirements of about 50,000 units each day will be met through solar energy generated from these plants,” V.J. Kurien, Managing Director, CIAL, said. The project will be inaugurated by Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on August 18, he told reporters here on Thursday.
