There is a saying that back in the days most of Tibetans are nomads and yak plays very significant part in their life. Nomads spend their whole life with yaks until the yak expire, therefore when yak dies, they keep the yak head to express a gratitude towards the yak because of how much yak has helped them with their lifestyle. And there is also saying that by displaying yak head to the stores or their doors it prevents misfortunes and bad spirits, but these days some people display in their home only because of fashion.
