Smoke coming out from dumping yard in South Delhi. A fire broke in a landfill of South Delhi. NDMC duty trucks and fire brigade truck arrives at a landfill to stop a fire. The fumes and the smoke from landfill fires make it difficult to breathe. Delhi generates an estimated 5,000 metric tonnes of garbage daily. An IIT Kanpur report on Delhi’s air quality showed 7% to 9% of the Capital’s particulate matter pollution is because of burning municipal solid waste. Burning waste also leads to an increased presence of chlorides in the air which weakens the immune system, irritates lungs and causes respiratory disorders.
