Mumbai's double decker buses

The double-decker, once the pride of the Mumbai city, was first launched in1937 with 210 buses in its fleet. The number was first increased to 803 in 1978 and further increased due to its popularity to 864 by the year 1982. This was the golden period of the double-decker. And that was it. Then was the beginning of its downfall as the operating cost of the double-decker became too much for the BEST. According to a BEST official, the single-decker bus has 52 sitting capacity and 13 standing, while the double-decker has 78 sitting and 19 standing capacity. The double-decker has a life span of 15 years after which they should be removed from services as there are no replacements. The remaining 122 buses too have a very few years of service and will be eventually phased out. Source: http://www.
