Such is the quality of life for these poor hard-working labourers that the only break that they get from their drain-cleaning manual scavenging work is for a short and brief cup of tea which also they must drink while down in a drain. They do not even have the liberty of coming out for a spot of tea. And in this boiling hot summer heat with the gases down in the drain, the boiling hot tea must not be the most pleasant drink for them either, but such is our conditioning in India that we drink tea on all occasions. Meanwhile, out comes the sewage and garbage that is clogging up the drain. And India drives past oblivious to the challenges that these poor men face, and the degrading life and profession that is forced upon them, as the only option that will give them that sad cup of tea down in
