Fire breaks out at AIIMS Delhi due to short circuit

Fire broke out at the teaching block of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), destroying samples, medical reports and sophisticated equipment, besides triggering widespread panic and chaos. Patients from some floors of the AB ward, close to the microbiology department where the blaze started, had to be evacuated along with those in operation theatres above it as the smoke spread. Rescuers had to break glass windows. The nearby emergency department had to be shut. Emergency patients coming to the hospital after 5 pm were asked to go to nearby Safdarjung Hospital.
