Sonia Gandhi, original name Edvige Antonia Albina Maino, (born December 9, 1946, Lusiana, Veneto region, Italy), Italian-born Indian politician who was president of the Indian National Congress (Congress Party; 1998–2017) and chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance (2004– ), a coalition of centre-left parties. In March 2006 Gandhi resigned from the Lok Sabha and as chairperson of the National Advisory Council—which oversaw the implementation of UPA policies and provided a salary to Gandhi for her work—after accusations that she was breaking a law that banned members of parliament from holding an additional office for profit.
