The century-old Royal Opera House in the Mumbai city has welcomed the public for the first time in more than two decades after a six-year restoration project. The building was inaugurated by King George V in 1911 and construction was completed in 1912. It featured a three-level auditorium, gilded ceilings, stained glass windows, and an ornate foyer which borrowed from both European and Indian designs. The building lent its name to the neighborhood where it was built, which has come to be known as Opera House. In the early 1930s, as movies gained popularity Mumbai, it was used as a cinema hall. In 1952, a few years after India’s independence from the British, the building was purchased by the Maharaja of Gondal, ruler of an area covering part of the modern-day state of Gujarat. However as a
