Maharaja Jivajirao Scindia of the Scindia dynasty of the Marathas was the last reigning Maharaja of Gwalior state in central India, and the rajpramukh (appointed governor) of the erstwhile Madhya Bharat state of independent India. Jai Vilas Palace was constructed by Maharaja Jayaji Rao scindia in 1874 at a cost of Rs. One crore. It is a fine example of Europian architecture, designed and built by Sir Michael Filose. Filose was rewarded with a well-deserved knighthood. It is particularly famous for its large Durbar Hall. The area of the JaiVilas palace is 12,40,771 square feet.The first storey is of the Tuscan, the second of the Italian-Doric and the third is of the Corinthian order of architecture.
