Madhavrao Jivajirao Scindia says "I think that the main challenges before the Rao government are the successful completion of the economic agenda that it has set for itself. I think that a major issue or a major message that the Rao government has to firmly broadcast so to speak is that what is important in the world today. And what is going to determine India's position in the world today." The former Maharaja of the princely state of Gwalior and a people-friendly politician, Madhavrao Scindia could have become India’s Prime Minister in 2004 if not for a cruel twist of fate. Within a year of returning to India, Madhavrao contested and won the 1971 general elections on a Jana Sangh ticket from Guna constituency in Madhya Pradesh.
