Devotees pray to the sun god and make offerings to the Sun god while standing in water. The offerings are made to the Chhathi Maiya. Standing in water for a long period of time they are offerings 'arghyas' to the rising and setting sun. The Goddess who is worshipped during the famous Chhath Puja is known as Chhathi Maiya.
