The largest compound of prisons in South Asia, Tihar Jail is also known as Tihar. It is located around 7 km away from Chanakya Puri, west of New Delhi, India at Tihar village. The nearby area is called Hari Nagar.It is not just a prison but also a Correctional Institution. Its main objective is to provide useful skills, and educate them so as to make them normal members of the society. The prison is meant to strengthen the inmates' desire to improve by boosting their self esteem. The inmates also manufacture products under the brand name of Tihar. It was run by the State of Punjab until 1966 and was a maximum security prison but later the control was transferred to National Capital Territory of Delhi.
