The sound of conches being blown and devotional songs being sung; the fragrance and smoke from incense sticks filling the air; the sight of Shivlings being bathed in milk and being garlanded with flowers; and hordes of people thronging to Shiva temples right across India; devotees offering fruits like bananas and coconuts and even the poisonous dhatura to their God, for it is His Night Maha Shivaratri – the great night of Shiva!! Shivaratri is celebrated on the new moon day of Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi in the Hindu calendar month of Maagha. This date generally falls in the month of February or March.
