Located northwest of Pokhara, Ghandruk can be reached in just a day—a short drive, then a four- to five-hour walk. The village lies on the popular Annapurna Base Camp trek, and so is a much-visited place by trekkers from all over the world. Means of livelihood is either through homestays and farming or use of mules for transportation of materials. Due to the tourist movement in and through Ghandruk, the demand for supplies goes up and in order to meet this demand, the locals get their supplies transported through mules who carry sacks from one place to another. As a result mountain mules suffer from various medical conditions including preventable wounds, lameness, colic, injuries and communicable diseases.
